The valley is sealed off from the Cascade Array towards the northeast and via the Klamath Mountains into the northwest. In the much north the terrain is rugged and intensely forested, starting to be wetter on the coastal side and drier and barren in the upper northeast. In the south the Central Valley is closed off by the transverse ranges, most no
